Castrignano del Capo, Salento - Puglia

The decommissioned Tobacco Factory for sale in Castrignano del Capo is an ancient structure dating back to the end of 1800. It covers an area of 700 square meters and is arranged on two levels. The interior rooms are made with the characteristic star, barrel and daisy vaults. The uncovered area around the Tobacco Factory for sale, belonging exclusively to the building, extends for about 1,000 square meters. Over the years, the Tobacco Factory has been used for several purposes. Among them, livestock farming. Indeed, this place was also inhabited by the "farmer" who used to live on the upper floor. The factor was the person responsible for the organisation of the workforce and the agricultural work to be carried out.

In the opposite part of the Tobacco Factory for, there is an old "farmyard". That is a contiguous area to the rural house, usually with a stone or bricks floor, or even dug into the rock, on which was carried out the manipulation and drying of agricultural products or for the processing of wheat and barley. It is a very old practice. On the farmyard floor, bundles of wheat and barley were laid down. A horse use to run around towing a block of stone that crushed the spikes, separating the grains. Then, with a pitchfork and thanks to the help of the wind, the shells flew away and you could collect the grains of wheat and grind them.

The Tobacco Factory  for sale in Santa Maria di Leuca is located 130km away from Salento Airport (Brindisi) and 90km from Lecce. The Municipality of Castrighano del Capo, where the property is located, is only 2 km far from Santa Maria di Leuca.

Castrignano del Capo

The place name Castrignano del Capo derives from the Latin "castrum" which means fortress, camp. Most likely, once, the small village was one of the fortifications of the Romans built for the defense of strategic places. In the tenth century, the Saracens destroyed the nearby farmhouse of Vereto, today Patù, and a part of the inhabitants took refuge at the fortress of Castrum and settled there.  So it was that Castrignano del Capo was born and also all the neighboring countries.

The Tobacco Factory  for sale is 2km far from Santa Maria di Leuca

At the very bottom of Puglia and Italy stands Santa Maria di Leuca. The promontory of Leuca has ancient origins. In fact, research has confirmed that this territory was frequented by the Neanderthal man. Winesses of his passage have been found in the caves of the Devil, the Giant and the Child.

In addition, in Santa Maria di Leuca, there was a village dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age located in the area of the current Sanctuary. Long before there was a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, the Minerva of the Romans, even the historian Strabone also wrote about it. The temple, in fact, was visible by sailors even miles away, and it caused a certain fear. According to others, however, the pagan temple was the coastal sanctuary of Grotta Porcinara, still present in Leuca, but guarded behind a grate that prevents access.

The lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca and the monumental waterfall

Leuca is also famous for its Lighthouse in its 48.6 meters. Located 102 meters above sea level on the promontory of Punta Meliso. Its beam of light, in optimal weather conditions, is visible even over 40 kilometers. Going down from the promontory of Punta Meliso, through a double staircase that goes up to the old fishermen’s port, you walk along the Monumental Waterfall of the Apulian Aqueduct, the precise point where the Aqueduct ends.

Since 2015 the waterfall is equipped with an artistic lighting system and is opened with regular appointments that represent a fascinating and evocative show for all tourists on holiday in Salento.

The 19th century villas of Leuca

The seafront of the tourist village of Santa Maria di Leuca is characterized by the famous and flamboyant nineteenth-century villas. They were built by the nobles who spent their holidays here. They are distinguished by the different architectural styles, shapes and colors. These are over forty beautiful noble villas.
