Municipality of Castrignano del Capo
The place name of Castrignano del Capo would derive from the Latin "castrum" which means fortress, camp. Most likely, once, the small village was one of the fortifications of the Romans built for the defense of strategic places. In the tenth century, the Saracens destroyed the nearby farmhouse of Vereto, today Patù, and a part of the inhabitants took refuge at the fortress of Castrum and settled there. So it was that Castrignano del Capo was born and also all the neighboring countries.
The Municipality of Castrignano del Capo, where the property is located, is only 2 km far from Santa Maria di Leuca that stands, at the extreme tip of the Apulia and of the Italy.
Santa Maria di Leuca is 130km from Salento Airport (Brindisi) and 90km from Lecce.
Leuca is the tourist resort famous especially for the nineteenth century villas. In fact, its seafront is characterized by the flamboyant and imposing villas built according to different architectural styles, shapes and colors. They were built by the nobles who spent their holidays here, for the most part from the architects Ruggeri and Rossi. Towards the end of the 19th century there were, to be precise, 43 villas. To date, many are unfortunately in disuse or appear deeply transformed compared to the past.
The lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca and the monumental waterfall
Leuca is very well known too for its lighthouse, located 102 meters above the sea level on the promontory of Punta Meliso, high 48.6 meters. Its beam of light, in optimal weather conditions, is visible even over 40 kilometers. Descending from the promontory of Punta Meliso, by means of a double staircase that leads to the old fishing port, it runs along by the Monumental Waterfall of the Apulian Aqueduct, that is the precise point at which the Aqueduct ends.
Since 2015 the waterfall is equipped with an artistic lighting system and is open with regular appointments that represent a fascinating and suggestive show for all tourists on holiday in Salento.
