In the Bay of San Gregorio, seaside resort of Patù, and away only 4 km  from it, once there was the port of the city of Vereto. On the spot, in fact, are still visible the remains of a staircase of Messapian origin, a well for the supply of the fresh water. The remains of the landing place are still visible just a few meters deep towards the tip of the inlet.

The municipality of Patù is 126 kilometers from the Airport of Salento (Brindisi). The small country is located at the extreme tip of the Cape of Leuca, at the foot of the hill of Vereto.

According to the historians, Patù's name is said to derive from the Greek pathos (suffering, pain). In fact, it would recall the sufferings of the town of Vereto (Veretum), which was destroyed by the Saracens, whence later born the hamlet. Among the most important historical sites we quote the archaeological one with the remains of the Messapian city of Vereto, "the Hundred-Stones," the staircase and the Messapian port in the Bay of San Gregorio.

The Hundred-Stones is an ancient funerary monument, declared a Second Class National Monument in 1873. Datable to the 9th century, it was built to bury the remains of the knight Geminianus. Messenger of peace killed by the Saracens just before the final battle on June 24, 877, between Christians and Islamists. The rectangular-shaped structure, is built with 100 limestone blocks from the Messapian city of Vereto. Within the interior introduces several overlapping layers of frescoes with sacred subjects dating back to the 14th century.
